Description: At the request of the Maine Governor's Energy Office, the Maine Department of Marine Resources (Maine DMR) conducted an analysis of the Area of Interest by integrating existing uses and development constraints to minimize impacts to marine resources and fisheries to identify a Narrowed Area of Interest (Narrowed AOI) for consideration. Maine DMR made use of a wide array of publicly available data, conducted interviews, and developed a composite map of fishing activity using maps on the Northeast Ocean Data Portal. Based on available federal fisheries data and the composite map that included other available data and in-person interviews, Maine DMR identified a Narrowed AOI within the Area of Interest where the least known fishing activity is occurring. This effort is part of the State’s initial steps to identify a proposed site and advance a research array in federal waters, which will require a separate federal review and approval process.
